Julian Toy
H.S.C., Substance Abuse Professional
I drank alcohol and used drugs daily for 16 years, from ages 12 to 28. Some drugs I used were cocaine, crack, opium, hash, pot, LSD and prescription narcotics. During my active addiction, I worked as a driver, CWB certified welder, forklift operator, machine operator and unionized laborer.
I went to treatment in 2000 after an intervention by my family. I did detoxification then treatment once and never used drugs or alcohol again. I’ve been in 12 step Recovery from alcohol and drug addiction since July 13, 2000.
In 2004 I graduated the Human Services Counselor program at George Brown College, majoring in addictions with a minor in mental health. I did one of my student placements at Renascent Center, the treatment center I graduated from in 2000.
Since 2009, I’ve been in private practice as a Substance Abuse Professional, performing SAP assessments and training companies to identify, prepare and intervene with employees who are not Fit for Duty. I’ve developed several national drug and alcohol training programs for large companies to train their supervisors and workers.
Most recently, I have been working as an instructor for the Continuing Education Department at George Brown College, teaching a Fit for Duty course I designed. It is a prerequisite for graduation from the Construction Supervisor and Construction Superintendent programs.
