Fentanyl is a very potent opioid that is usually used in a hospital setting to treat severe pain related to surgery or complex pain conditions. However, because a few grains can be enough to kill you, in non-medical situations illegal fentanyl is causing high rates of overdose and overdose deaths. Of all accidental apparent opioid toxicity deaths in 2023, 84% involved fentanyl.
