Quebec’s minimum wage is rising 50 cents an hour to $15.75 as of May 1, 2024. That’s a 3.3% increase, which is above the anticipated inflation for 2024-2025, which is 2.3%.

The province said about 200,700 workers will be receive the wage hike, including about 200,700 women.

Labour Minister Jean Boulet justifies the 50-cent hourly increase by the economic uncertainty.

“We must understand that significantly increasing the wage could have a negative effect and put considerable pressure on employers, leading to closures in the retail, restaurant, or accommodation sectors, which is undesirable. This could have detrimental consequences on the Quebec economy,” said Boulet. (Quote translated from French.)

The government said its goal is to maintain the minimum wage at about 50% of the average salary in the province. With the increase to $15.75, it will be sitting at 50.8%, it said.
